Poster child of the revenge of the nerds, the little guys
get even quite easily – but they have to know their limitations. The -1
penalty to all combat is huge, and there is not really any getting around
that. As such, even their dreadnoughts are just big cruisers. So, the
Jol Nar need to use their huge tech advantage to compensate. Having twice the tech of anyone else to start (Enviro
Compensators, Stasis Capsules, Antimass Deflectors, XRD Transporters),
and 10 credits off all tech but red, most technology will come easily
and quickly. However, they will rarely have much hope of getting red,
which costs 10 MORE, to make up for their frailties. However, other technology
can make up for the lack of military options. Neural Motivator is an early necessity, to use cards to
bolster their military options. Type IV Drive follows, and those weak
Dreadnaughts really are battle cruisers with the capability to bombard.
With speed 2 carriers and dreadnaughts, the Jol Nar can concentrate their
fleet, and still have the ability to defend a substantial area, compensating
for weak combat ability. Spatial Jump can come right after, and suddenly no one’s
home is secure. Since Light/Wave Deflector requires 3(!) red, they will
never see it, but Spatial Jump will keep people backed up and defensive.
Micro Technology can come early, if there is a lot of trade, and could
lead to Integrated Economy with Cybernetics, giving them quicker builds
and making their fighters normal. Since technology will come easily, the Jol Nar problem
will be taking and holding enough planets to advance. A solid alliance
with another player might be necessary, to get help, and so direct conflict
should be avoided. To deter early aggression by neighbors, growth should
be slow and steady, with plenty of buildup of defensive forces. The initial
PDS should stay home and keep blockaders away. Good home influence means
they will move early, and influence voting, so they, like the Xxcha, should
demilitarize the game by political initiatives. Face to face confrontation MUST be avoided, so use setup
to put voids between yourself and your neighbors, so they don’t have an
excuse to set up shop on your borders – and soon cross them. The Summary: Out geek your opponents by beating them in
non-military ways. Don't challenge anyone to a fight after school! |
